Canadian Taxation System Explained

Understand Canada's progressive tax system, marginal rates, and differences between federal and provincial taxes.

Marginal vs. Effective

Canada operates on a progressive tax system. You only pay the higher rate on the portion of your income that falls into that specific bracket.

Federal Income Tax Rates (2024)

  • 15% on the first $55,867 of taxable income
  • 20.5% on the next $55,866 (up to $111,733)
  • 26% on the next $61,472 (up to $173,205)
  • 29% on the next $73,547 (up to $246,752)
  • 33% on taxable income over $246,752

Remember, provincial taxes are applied on top of federal taxes. A resident of Ontario will have a different total tax burden than a resident of Alberta earning the exact same salary.
