Path to Canadian Citizenship

Requirements and timelines for permanent residents to become Canadian citizens.

The Final Step

Canadian citizenship grants the right to vote, run for political office, and hold a Canadian passport.

Physical Presence Requirement

To be eligible, you must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) during the 5 years right before the date you sign your application.

Time spent in Canada as a temporary resident (e.g., on a study or work permit) can count towards this total, up to a maximum of 365 days, calculated at a half-day rate.
